1st - I research anything I buy (I'm not talking about everyday purchases) like an OCD investigator. I have to read and reread and search some more reviews and prices and problems, etc to the point that I probably know more about the product than the manufacturer...you get my drift? 2nd - I'm very white...VERY white..and I have dark hair everywhere..I am a furry little critter. Thanks to my paternal genes (my dad has been mistaken for Sasquatch more than once) and PCOS, which causes hirsutism (look it up), I didn't stand a snowball's chance in the microwave of being normal in the hair department. I have such sensitive skin that I can't wax (not even my eyebrows or upper lip), and hair removal creams cause me chemical burns. I can only shave about every 3 days or my skin gets so irritated (my legs, underarms, anywhere)...and that's using latest and greatest razors...I've tried them all. 3rd - I have had laser hair removal done on my face for several years at my gyno's office, until I moved to my current city. Since I lost my job and laser treatments are pretty expensive, I haven't been able to have it done in almost two years. What had become a routine of touch-up treatments about every 2-3 months when I started noticing some dark hair growing back, has once again become a daily ritual of shaving with an electric razor. If you've ever experienced excessive hair growth on your face as a woman, you know what kind of embarassment and emotional distress this can cause. 4th - I've put off purchasing an at-home machine because of the expense and not knowing which one was better, or if any of them would actually help me. But one day, I just decided to bite the bullet and buy the machine...I was at my breaking point with the whole hairy issue! lol I chose the Silk'n machine for several reasons: 1) It can be plugged in...so no battery dying halfway thru a session. 2) It has probably the largest treatment area of all the ones I researched. 3) It has a base with indicators on it, and the part you hold in your hand is smaller (though still a bit larger and awkwardly shaped than is ideal), and I don't feel like I'm shooting myself in the face (my mental image of using the Tria). 4) The price of the machine. It's expensive, but compared to the others, I just felt this was the better value. 5) This is an actual pulsed light machine, so it's the closest thing to what my doctor's office used. I know it's not intended to be as strong as what my doctor's office had, but it's along the same technology...I looked at the NONO and it's just (in my opinion) a hot razor. I've used this machine twice now, but I noticed results after my first session. That may be because I'd had treatments on my face before, I don't know, but it worked! I read some reviews that said it doesn't work, it's a scam, don't waste your money, etc...but I'm telling you it works for me. I've used it on my face, arms, entire legs, underarms, stomach(the area between belly button and bikini area), and the bikini area and nether regions (the entire region)....and like I said, it's working for me. I have usually thick, course black hair, and while it's still there right now, I'm only on my 2nd treatment session..I'm sure the results will be even better after the next few. Also, the treatments I had at the doctor's office hurt like a %$#@*$!!! Like I said, I'm very sensitive...but I was pleasantly surprised that this didn't hurt at all (evidence it's not nearly as strong as my doctor's machine thank God!) One negative is that you can't exactly tell where you just treated, so you may miss spots or overlap...be careful if you overlap, because you may burn yourself. I haven't yet, but I'm very careful. Also, the lighting in the room where you do your treatment may affect the skin tone sensor thing...if you're using the device and it beeps that your skin is too dark, try a different angle or you may have to move because of shadows and such. In a nutshell, THE MACHINE WORKS! If you're dark skinned or have light hair, I don't know if it'll work that well, if at all, for you. If you're light skinned with dark hair, TRY IT! It's working for me! When this machine has lived it's life and just can't go on, I'll most likely buy another...because despite what anyone is touting, hair removal is NOT permanent. Our bodies are living things and are constantly changing and growing, etc. You can greatly reduce and almost eliminate the hair, but it's hair reduction and has to be maintained...it will eventually grow back with almost any removal method if you don't maintain it. Just as an FYI because I read so many reviews and such, I am a real person who bought the machine online...I am no way affiliated with Silk'n, so I'm not trying to sell you on it...I'm just stating my experience with it in the hopes that someone who has suffered from unwanted hair where it shouldn't be will know that this machine works, and I feel it's worth a try.
